Tip #1 Stay calm! Your nervousness will be felt by your mum.
Tip #2 Like baking a cake - have all your whelping
items ready before she goes into labor.
Tip #3 Have another person there to help since you are new to this.
Tip #4 Have your vet's phone number close in case of emergency.

Your breeders are the same size as mine so you are good there. What are you feeding them and how many times are you mating them in a season?
You can email me direct thru my web site too.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I'm always surprised at how different births can be. My females are 4 lbs to 6 lbs, the stud we use is 3 lbs. We have a 95% survival rate. I'm thinking perhaps I am rushing the moment but I like to get pups cleaned and at mom for milk as fast as possible. Watching some videos here where they are in sac or aspirating fluids rattles me. You do a fine job and I hope to see more of your dogs' whelps.

There are a lot of factors involved here. Size and bone structure of your female and your male, diet, born breach or head first, number of pups in the litter, etc. I try to keep mama relaxed and not do the work for her but just assist her so she will drop that after birth and not try to retract it..
I too, often have to work with the delivery details, removing the sac, clear air passages and massage, etc. I always clamp & cut the cord so mom doesn't cut it too short causing death or hernias

In the video, you pull the pup gently and the placenta comes out very easily, when my chihuahuas whelp, theirs does not detach and I'm left with trying to get the pup out of the sac, breathing, clamping both chi pup and cord, cut and stimulate much more. All my pups are typically 40 to 55 grams each. Yours look much bigger. Do you think this is why there is a difference here? |
